Jeld-Wen

Nelson Construction & Development was hired by Jeld-Wen, a manufacturing company, to complete the design build services on a $7.7 million, multi-phase construction project in Grinnell, Iowa. The project scope contained a plethora of construction disciplines from office remodel and additions, major site utilities, and grading package to deep pile foundation and a 50,000 square foot factory structural steel infill addition to connect two facilities. This project was constructed while the existing plant remained in operation, producing doors seven days a week.

Much of the design and construction effort was spent working out cost efficient ways to remove multiple load-bearing masonry walls inside the existing “c” shape, 225,000 square foot building to create an open and efficient factory plan. It was also required to cut into the existing slab to create 19 equipment pits for equipment presses and other major equipment. In addition, 26 new overhead doors had to be cut in, along with loading dock pits, into an existing load bearing wall for Jeld-Wen’s new plant layout.
