The Fleming Building has completed construction and is now open for residential and commercial tenants to begin moving in. The market-rate apartments are nearing full occupancy and the second floor has been leased for office use.
Owners Mike Nelson and BJ Baker, with the help of Nelson Construction & Development, have transformed a historic, century-old downtown office building into a revitalized mixed-use structure that will add 5,000 square-feet of retail space on Walnut Street and 95 residential units to downtown Des Moines. The project will benefit the metro area as a whole, but will be especially helpful in strengthening the downtown core, of great importance for Des Moines because a strong downtown is essential to the success of any community.
