Fleming Building

The century-old downtown office building has been revitalized into a mixed-use structure that adds commercial and residential vitality to the core of downtown Des Moines. Nelson Construction & Development partnered with Slingshot Architecture in the restoration of the building, known for its Chicago School of architecture. Daniel Burnham, the famed architect of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed this building as the first low-rise in downtown Des Moines. The Fleming Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Construction started on the Fleming Building in May 2012, transforming it into modern commercial and residential space with modern mechanical, plumbing, and interior design. The project was completed in June of 2013. The first and second floors offer commercial space and floors three through eleven feature 96 apartments to meet the growing demand for market-rate housing in the area.
