Liberty Building

Nelson Development converted the Liberty Office Building, a 12-story, 155,000 square foot historic building, into a premium downtown mixed-use project including a Hyatt Place hotel, residential condominiums, office and retail space. Floors 4 through 8 house a 90-room Hyatt Place that opened in December 2010. This downtown Des Moines location will be Hyatt Place’s first in the state of Iowa.

A private health club occupies 10,000 square feet of the first two floors. This space includes state of the art fitness club and a juice bar. MetaBank has a branch and office on the second and third floors of the building, and a low office occupies the top floor.

There are 16 luxury residential condominium units on floors 9 through 11, plans range in size from 1,070 square feet to 2,500 square feet and range in cost from $200,000 to $500,000. Each unit comes with extra storage within the building and parking within a new secured, 6-story, skywalk-accessible resident parking ramp across the street. The new ramp rises on the footprint of the former Babe’s restaurant, managed by Des Moines legend Babe Bisignano, who closed the landmark restaurant in 1991.
